Hogsty Atoll

Hogsty Atoll is truly one of the Atlantic’s hidden wonders — a rare and breathtaking natural marvel. Floating in the southern Bahamas between Great Inagua and Mayaguana Island.  It is one of only two true atolls in the entire western hemisphere and the only true Atoll in the Atlantic Basin. Even more extraordinary, unlike the volcanic atolls found throughout the Pacific, Hogsty Reef is non-volcanic, rising straight out of deep ocean waters over 6,000 feet deep. Its striking circular shape encloses a shallow, turquoise lagoon and frames two tiny, uninhabited cays that feel like secret worlds of their own.

The reef is also famous for its ghostly shipwrecks, with at least two prominent vessels—The Trebišnjica (a Yugoslav freighter) and The Lady Eagle—rusting away on the coral, offering haunting reminders of the its deceptive calm.

These skeletal remains draw in divers and photographers, adding a mysterious layer to Hogsty’s allure. The reef’s waters are home to a stunning diversity of marine life, including rare coral species, reef sharks, and abundant tropical fish.

Sea turtles and dolphins are frequently spotted, and migratory seabirds nest on the few sandy cays that peek above the waterline. Its raw beauty, inaccessibility, and unique geological nature make Hogsty Reef not just a navigational hazard, but a dazzling, almost mythical place – unchanged by time and untouched by tourism.
